Homemade Butter

I've always wanted to make butter myself, but never really tried. Well, a friend posted her butter-making adventures on Facebook, so I thought I would finally give it a try. It's actually really easy, and it turned out nice and creamy, too :).

Start with some heavy cream. Organic is nice, but a bit too rich for our frugal blood. I'll be checking into the price of Costco's organic cream really soon.

Put it in your stand mixer (you can add a bit of salt if you like salted butter), then turn that puppy on and just let it mix... and mix... and mix. Let it go until the buttermilk separates out and starts sloshing around in the bowl. Squeeze the remaining liquid out of the butter and place it in the desired container.

You'll have some nice buttermilk left over for pancakes or biscuits, which you can spread your creamy butter on when they're nice and hot.

Here are the final products of my butter-making adventure. I'm quite pleased, and definitely plan on making more! Thanks, Sarah :).

I looked for organic cream at Costco yesterday and didn't see it. :-( It was the Clackamas one. Perhaps the airport one has it.

For some reason the whole homemade butter thing has never crossed my mind. Duh. Now I'll have to give it a try! I'm sure Noah wouldn't mind the side effect of pancakes.

Becci, I'm just curious. How does making your own butter compare in price to buying it? Also, do you know how many cups of butter you ended up with from the pint of heavy whipping cream? Thank you for sharing your adventures with us!

I'd say it's pretty similar in price, but tastes better. Although, if you find some cream on sale, it might be cheaper. It's definitely fresher! I got about a cup of butter and a cup of buttermilk from that 16 oz container of cream. So I'd say it's about 1/2 and 1/2 yield for each. But then I have only made it once, so it might vary a bit. And butter is freezable, so if you get cream on sale (David saw some close to date that was about 1/2 price), then you can make a big batch and freeze it for later use. Even the store brand butter is pretty spendy here, so I'll be experimenting to see what the best option is. I'll let you know what I discover :).
