The Vacuum is on fire!

I was vacuuming the carpet yesterday, and I noticed a slightly odd smell. I tried to ignore it at first, but it kept getting stronger. I was in the middle of the living room when I noticed the vacuum sound getting lower and lower... and rubbery-smelling smoke poring out of the grate. The living room got aired out for a good 1/2 hour.

Needless to say, it's time for a new vacuum. Any recommendations? Any vacuums out there that work really well, yet don't cost an arm and a leg?

Dorothy is almost 7 months old! And she is "enjoying" her 4th cold. Not so much. She slept in the bouncy seat because she wouldn't sleep laying down. I want to give her cold medicine, but don't know if she can have it this young. Can she?

Sorry about the vaccuum I wish I had advice but apparently I don't know how to choose them. They burn up or break somehow....
Sorry Dorothy has another cold. I can't remember if she can have cold medicine yet I would check with the dr if your not sure. I do know they sell tylenol cold for babies.

We just bought a Dirt Devil Reaction and we love it. It cost about $150 at Target. Its easy to clean and use.

Becci,
You may just need a new belt or else check to make sure something isn't wrapped around the brush bar on the vacuum. I have had that happen to me and it is as simple as changing the belt, which should only cost you a couple dollars and most brands you can get the belts at Walmart. Or have to take the brush bar out and peel the hair and string off of the bar as well as where it attaches to the gears of the machine itself. Can't hurt to try that first, it is alot cheaper. Good luck.

I had that happen to me! It sucks! (but not like it is supposed to, haha). You can replace the belt, but when ours went kaput, we decided the vacuum we had was so cruddy that we needed a new one. They are not cheap. We got the one recommended by Consumer Reports, but now for the life of me, I can't remember what it is. It is beltless, though, hopefully avoiding the whole friction/hair/belt burning incident in the future. Good luck!

Like others said, you may just need a new belt or beater bar.
